Devlog 1: Introduction

Hello and welcome to Melting Point, a 2D factory-platformer game with temperature mechanics.

We are three students from the University of Chile, and this is our project for the course CC5409 in multiplayer gamedev. Our humble team is composed of:

  • Digox
  • Leo
  • ElvieLynx

Introduction

Melting Point is a 2D factory-platformer game, meaning platforming style traversal, combined with your favourite building and resource processing mechanics from games like Factorio, Satisfactory, and Mindustry. Players will have to mine blocks to extract resources to build machines to extract resources to build machines to extract resources... you get the point. However; along the way you'll have to take into account ambient temperatures. The Planet™ has a very cold surface, and a progressively hotter core. Different materials will require different temperatures to be processed and combined with others in order to produce synthetic materials and other useful things. All this in order to get to the core of the planet and claim the motherlode!

Players will also have access to three different classes, each with their own unique abilities that'll make them more or less suited for certain tasks, though they won't be restricted from doing a task they're "bad" at. We hope to encourage collaboration between players, so that working together will make the path to victory much easier.

Current Version

As first version, the game will have up to 3 players simultaneously, each with one of the following roles: "Engineer", "Scientist" or "Scout". Currently, the only difference between roles is the sprite of the player. Players can mine through terrain one block at a time, receiving feedback through a block-breaking animation.

Coming up

In the coming weeks we plan to implement:

  • Create the first iteration of the map
  • Resource generation
  • The temperature system
  • Start with the abilities of all our characters
  • Create the first machine (the miner) to start the factories
